Do I Need a Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation?

This is a common question for plastic surgeons and one with many different answers depending on the goals the patient wishes to achieve.

I would recommend that before seeing the surgeon, a patient takes a good look at her breasts in a mirror in order to assess for nipple position on the chest wall.  Look for three important clues:  Are my nipples sitting below the Inframammary fold?  Are my nipples hanging more than halfway down between my shoulder and elbow?  and Can I place a pencil under my breast and get it to stay?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may be more likely to need a nipple/areolar lift whether with or without an implant.

Also, ask yourself if you prefer to have a lot of upper pole fullness in your breast (like a push up bra gives) or if you prefer the more natural slope?  This may help you think about whether you would want to have an implant to enhance the upper breast fullness or not.

Combined breast lift and augmentation is a procedure that has gained understanding and usefulness over the years and now is quite commonly done if the patient has no other risk factors such as excessive sagginess or medical health problems.  Most surgeons are very good at explaining these issues to the patient in order to help you achieve the look you want!
