A brow lift is a cosmetic procedure that can help to combat the visible signs of aging on the forehead and brow such as deep wrinkles, crease, lines and sagging. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Barbara Howard offers brow lifts at her plastic surgery center in Jefferson City.

What Is a Brow Lift?

Brows tend to sag as you age. The distance between the upper lashes and the brows also grows shorter over time, mainly due to the skin’s loss of elasticity. The lower your brows go, the more tired, sad, or angry you appear.

A brow lift can address sagging brows and make you look younger. It can also address drooping skin on the forehead, along with wrinkles like vertical lines between the brows and horizontal forehead lines.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Brow Lift?

You may be a candidate for a brow lift if you have a sagging forehead or brows that hang too low and too close to the eyes. You may also desire a forehead or brow lift if you have deep vertical furrows between the eyebrows (frown lines). A forehead lift (brow lift) is intended to give a more youthful and rested appearance to the forehead and upper eyelids. During your initial consultation, Dr. Barbara Howard will perform an assessment of your face and ask about your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for a brow lift.

However, you might not be an ideal candidate for a brow lift if you have dry eyes, because the procedure might worsen the condition. If the surgeon lifts the brows, it might do the same to drooping eyelids, increasing the eyes’ exposure.

People with a high hairline may not be good candidates for a brow lift, since the procedure will lift the brow and do the same to the hairline. The surgeon might recommend a different procedure for this case.

The Brow Lift Procedure

Generally, our full brow lifts are performed at a local outpatient hospital or surgical facility. A brow lift is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or monitored sedation. The incisions are usually made behind the hairline. For patients with high foreheads, the incisions can be placed in front of the hairline. The operation is done using an endoscope (a narrow hollow instrument with a fiber optic light source and camera, through which the procedure is done with small special instruments.) The forehead skin is lifted and repositioned. The muscles that cause frown lines are weakened.

Incisions from the procedure are often closed with special clips, skin adhesives, or removable or absorbable sutures. Results will only be visible a few weeks after the brow lift when the bruising and swelling subside.

Combining Your Brow Lift With Other Procedures

Additional procedures that may enhance the results or provide more comprehensive results when combined with a forehead lift are a lower and/or upper-eyelid lift, face lift, or other facial procedures such as facial implants.

How Much Does a Brow Lift Cost?

A brow lift is considered a cosmetic procedure and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The price of the procedure depends on the individual needs of each patient and the overall complexity required to achieve one’s aesthetic goals. After Dr. Howard has developed your personalized treatment plan, she will discuss the associated cost.

Recovering From a Brow Lift?

The specific risks and the suitability of the forehead lift procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. You will experience some swelling and bruising in the treatment area, but this is temporary and will subside. The patient goes home with their head wrapped in dressings, which are usually removed on the first or second day after surgery. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures or staples are removed within 10 days and most swelling and bruising is gone in 7-10 days.

Reviews

I just had my first Botox session yesterday…already I’m shocked and amazed. I didn’t realize how such a subtle change could be so drastic at the same time. Already I can see where lines have vanished in the middle of my fore head and my eyes have this wonderful ‘awake’ look. I was having trouble figuring out why I looked so tired all the time. Hearing people tell me “Wow, you look really tired!” was getting really annoying. I finally have those movie star eye brow arches that I have been trying to pluck to get. Little did I know it’s not just in the plucking! I can’t wait to see the rest of the results. I just couldn’t wait another day without thanking you.
